To keep global temperature rise under 2 degrees in line with the Paris Agreement, designers need to look beyond operational energy and also address embodied carbon.

Both the RICS Professional Statement and the London Plan put this at the heart of carbon reduction efforts.

Whole Life Carbon Assessments (LCA) and Circular Economy Statements are now mandatory for large-scale developments in London.

What does this this mean for your project?

LCA takes into consideration all the steps that lead from raw material through manufacture, distribution and usage to final disposal.

Conducting an LCA will enable you to demonstrate reduced environmental impacts by:

  • Evaluating building site options to select the lowest impact choice.
  • Comparing the environmental impacts of renovating rather than demolishing and building anew.
  • Comparing design alternatives to choose the lowest impact ones.
  • Identifying a building’s environmental hotspots and taking action to reduce them.
  • Calculating the lifetime impact of building materials and products to help find the most sustainable options.

How can Cooper Homewood Sustainability help?

The RICS Guidance is a standardised, science-based methodology for quantifying the lifetime environmental impact of development schemes.

Cooper Homewood use One Click LCA (which has the GLA seal of approval) to help you meet local and regional requirements and can compile compliant Whole Life Carbon and Circular Economy Statements in support of your development scheme.

With One Click LCA we can support you through all stages of the submission from pre-application stage to post-construction making the shift to a whole carbon approach easier.

Using this platform helps us to perform a life cycle assessment of the whole building in a very short time and identify the hotspots in which you need to take action, helping you demonstrate your credentials to the relevant Authorities.
